Many books have been published about the Atlantic Wall in the last few years, but none of these books contains the amount of information of this book. Although it was first published in 1998, it still sets the standard for this type of book. Not only is it one of the very few books to describe the ENTIRE Atlantic Wall, but it provides the best (and most!) in-depth information! The first part of the book informs the reader about German concrete fortifications in general - from the late 19th century to the first German bunkers of World War One. In the 1930's the Germans started construction of a number of defencelines in their own country - famous names like the Westwall, the Oder-Warthe-Bogen. These defences are described briefly. Rolf continues with descriptions of other types of German bunkers - airraid shelters, etc. and goes on with his detailed description of the history, organisation and development and typology of the bunkers of the Atlantic Wall. Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of plans, drawings and photos. The second part of the book is the geographical part, in which Rolf takes the reader from the north of Norway along the coasts of Norway, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium and France - and, of course the Channel Islands! He describes the different coastal batteries and strongpoints with ALL the permanent fortifications, the so-called "Regelbauten". Rolf uses many maps, plans and photos in his listings and gives much additional information on subjects as armament, typology, building materials, etc. This part of the book is of interest to all the readers that want to visit the remains of the Atlantic Wall. The last part of the book contains information on artillery, typology, abbreviations, tactical signs and literature on the subject as well as an index with geographical and personal names. All in all, this is THE book to buy when you're interested in the Atlantic Wall. There is NO other book that contains this kind of information - in quantity as well as quality! The book is written in German and contains MANY HUNDREDS of illustrations.
