On April 11, 1945, Canadian units of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division, supported by amphibious Buffalo vehicles, crossed the IJssel River at Gorssel during Operation Cannonshot. This daring crossing heralded the liberation of Apeldoorn and eventually the western Netherlands. What followed were six days of fierce fighting. In villages such as Wilp and Posterenk, at bridges and in densely forested areas, the Canadian troops were embroiled in a bloody battle. Behind every canal and dike, the German defenders waited, determined to repel every attack. As casualties mounted and the end of the war loomed, tensions grew by the day.
