Description

Lavishly and beautifully illustrated book about the life and works of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, France's most famous fortress engineer. Although most of the book is about the fortifications designed by Vauban, there is also much attention for his military sieges and his political career.

The book is illustrated with a large amount of plans and maps of fortifications and fortified towns and cities that were taken from the immense archives at the chateau of Vincennes. Plans of (a.o.): Lille, Phalsbourg, Nancy, Maastricht, Charleroi, etc. These plans and maps are beautifully drawn in colour. Published for the 300th anniversery of Vauban's death in 1707. The scans show some of the plans and maps. Written in French entirely and illustrated with HUNDREDS of photos, drawings, plans and maps.
