Description

The Battle of the Scheldt is one of the largest military operations of the Second World War on Dutch territory. Yet this battle is relatively unknown, especially outside of Zeeland and West Brabant. On 4 September 1944, the Antwerp port installations fell into allied hands virtually undamaged. Due to major logistical problems following the rapid advance from Normandy, this is a huge windfall for the Allies. But as long as German guns in the Scheldt estuary control access to the port city, they have no use of the ports. Hitler recognizes the strategic importance and orders his troops in Zeeland Flanders and Walcheren to hold on to the last man. The 1st Canadian Army is ordered to expel the Germans from the Scheldt estuary. In the fall of 1944, West Brabant, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, Zuid-Beveland and Walcheren became the scene of a battle that was as heroic as it was bitter, which required a great deal of effort on the part of the warring parties and the population of Zeeland and West Brabant in a desperate situation. floats. With the capitulation of Walcheren, the Battle of the Scheldt was settled on November 8, 1944. When a few weeks later the mines in the Westerschelde have been cleared and the first convoys have reached the port of Antwerp, the supply problems for the allied forces are over and the German defeat in Western Europe has become inevitable. The consequences of the violence of the war are disastrous. More than five thousand soldiers and civilians do not survive the Battle of the Scheldt, thousands are wounded and entire villages and landscapes are destroyed. The Canadians experience the victory as a 'Terrible Victory' and the fighting in the southwest of the Netherlands as the most bloody of their campaign in Western Europe.

Authors Tobias van Gent and Hans Sakkers have dozens of publications on military-historical subjects to their name and are in great demand. With this excellently documented and beautifully illustrated book, they give the Battle of the Scheldt the place in the history that this battle deserves.
