The Division started its activities as defenders of the Westwall. In 1940 they took part in the Westfeldzug, through Luxemburg and Belgium to Nevers in France. Between February 1941 and January 1942 they defende the Atlantic coast in France, after which the Division was moved to Russia - Welish, Welikije Luki, Nowo Szokolniki
