History and description of the forts and fortifications of the Dutch Waterline, a 19the century defenceline protecting the Western part of Holland against an enemy attack coming from the East. The defences of the Dutch Waterline relied on the flooding of large parts of the country, so the enemy could not see where roads and ditches were. The higher grounds - dikes and railroads- were covered by artillery pieces that were placed in forts and batteries. This book shows how the flooding of the land worked and could be achieved as well as the forts and batteries that still remain in Holland. Often very beautiful brickwork forts in a equally beautiful surrounding of green fields and pastures. The book is written in Dutch and is illustrated with HUNDREDS of photos, plans, drawings and maps. One of the very best books on the subject. |
