Detailed history and description of the mostly 19th century fortifications of Swinemünde, now Swinoujscie (Poland) - using plans, maps and drawings. Swinemünde used to be a German baltic port and it was fortified from 1848 onwards, when a battery and an infantry position was built on each side of the Swine river. The fortifications were modernised quite regularly and new fortifications were added until World War One. This book describes the 19th century fortifications - NOT the concrete fortifications that were built after World War One. Many of these 19th century fortifications remain and can be vistited. The book is written in Polish AND in German and is illustrated with 120+ photos, plans, drawings and maps. |
