Sveaborg - The Island Fortress off Helsinki

Sveaborg - The Island Fortress off Helsinki
Author: Hällström, Olof af

Languages: English, Finnish, Swedish

History and description of Sveaborg or Suomenlinna, a fortress built off the coast of Helsinki, Finland.

Description

Sveaborg (Suomenlinna), also called "The Gibraltar of the North", is a unique fortress built on a group of islands off Helsinki, the capital of Finland. The construction of Sveaborg was initiated by Augustin Ehrensvård in the mid-18th century, and it was one of the most extensive military construction projects ever undertaken by the Swedish realm.

After shielding Sweden towards the east, the fortress became in 1808 Russia's protection against the west and in 1918, as Finland declared herself independant, the Russian garrison was replaced by Finnish miliatries. Today Sveaborg is one of the most beautiful historical museums in the Nordic countries, visited yearly by thousands of tourists.

The book is written in THREE languages: Finnish, Swedish and English. It is lavishly illustrated with more than 200 photos, maps, drawings and plans - of which quite a few are in colour.
