Description

The Dutch have built fortifications and other defenses in many locations far from the Netherlands over the centuries. Usually they served to protect Dutch interests. For example, the United East Indies Company (VOC) and the West Indies Company (WIC), who were given the power by the Staten Generaal (Dutch government) to fight with rival European powers. And also to the colonial presence in the Dutch Indies.

Unlike many books about the VOC and the WIC, this is not a typical story about adventurous explorations, trade driving, slavery and easily earning a lot of money. Well, it's a book about the often difficult way in which Dutch people set foot on a strange shore. Regularly, the Portuguese had to be defeated, after which relations with the local people were built. Most of them had their own princes, which caused the Dutch to fall into regional political intrigues, rarely fed by other Western countries. In addition, one lived in areas with a different climate and dangerous diseases.

In two review articles and 12 more specific contributions, expert authors go into the design, construction and reinforcement of fortresses in all parts of the world. Often, these are not success stories, but reconstructions of the difficult circumstances under which motivated soldiers and adventurers with a too small budget tried to make the best of it. Also a Dutch engineer who came to terms with his knowledge of defense work in foreign service, as well as foreign engineers who worked for the VOC. Through these stories, the reality is always that the VOC and WIC did not have a colonial ambition but only the purpose to make a profit. These realistic analyzes make this book a unique addition to what has already been published in this area.
