The book describes the history and present state of the Maginot Line in Northern France - the Lorraine / Alsace region.
For many years after World War Two, the French Maginot Line was almost forgotten. In France nor anywhere else, anyone seemed to be interested in this huge, mostly underground defenceline. Something has been changing in the last couple of years. This book is one of the reasons of this slow change. The book is a highly detailed history of the Maginot Line in Northern France - the Lorraine - Alsace region to be more precise. A large number of major and minor forts ("Gros Ouvrage" and "Petit Ouvrage" in French) were built here in the 1930's. The book shows them all, using many illustrations like contemporary and modern photographs, maps, drawings and floorplans. You will find all the details you want on history, armour, armament, equipment, architectural details - you name it! The book can also be used as a travelguide for anyone that is interested in finding the remains of the Maginot Line. It gives information on how to find the remaining forts and bunkers and in what shape they're in. It also gives information on which forts can be visited. Jean-Bernard Wahl is considered to be one of THE experts on the Maginot Line. He has been studying these huge fortifications since 1975 and has published books and articles on the subject. Without a doubt, this is one of the very best books on the French Maginot Line. It contains MANY HUNDREDS of illustrations and is VERY hard-to-find. |
