During World War Two, the German authorities built hundreds of shelters where the civilians of the city could find cover during bombing raids by the Allied airforces. This book tells the story of these shelters. Of the shelters, the bunkers and the tunnels. How were they built? Where? These and all other questions you can think of all answered in the book - often using photos (contemporary as well as present-day), technical drawings, floorplans, maps and other documents. The book also tells about the so-called "Flaktürme" - the huge airraidbunkers with heavy anti-aircraft artillery on top of them, only built in Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna. But the book also shows the equipment used in the bunkers - as well as daily life in them and, last-but-not-least: what is the present status of these giants. A great book on a fairly unknown piece of 20th century defences. The book is written in German and illustrated with HUNDREDS of photos, drawings, plans and maps. |
