Guns and Carriages

    Following the publication of his book "Cannon - The Conservation, Reconstruction and Presentation of historic Artillery", in 1993, Austin C. Carpenter has continued to undertake a number of large-scale and ground-breaking projects, not the least of which was his involvement in the construction of the world's only fully operational example of the Moncrieff depression mounting carriage, installed at Crownhill Fort, Plymouth, England, in a purpose built emplacement, identified by the author during restoration work there in the 1980's.

Historians and artillery experts worldwide have since clamoured for more information concerning the Moncrieff carriage, and the publication of this book is a response to their demands. Here is an account of the origins of the Moncrieff system, details of the early guns and their emplacements throughout the world, evidence of their remains, and a full study of the reproduction of the carriage and its gun under the aegis of The Landmark Trust.
