The book describes the history of "Sokrates" and the history of the airdefence of the German Reich in and around Stade, Germany.
The air-defence of the German Reich was led and co-ordinated from so called "Jägerleitstellen" in Hitler-Germany and the occupied countries. In case of and attack by air - bombers as well as fighters - the enemy planes were detected by German radar. These radar-signals were sent to the "Jägerleitstelle" of that specific region, from were German fighters were guided to intercept these bombers or fighters. In the beginning of the war these "Jägerleitstellen" were housed in quite simple wooden or brick buildings. When things turned for the worse (for the Germans), it was decided to build bunkers for this purpose. The most famous (NOT the only ones!) of these bunkers were placed in Schaarsbergen (near Arnhem, Holland), at Karup/Grove Airfield (Denmark) and at Stade (near Hamburg, Germany). These 3 bunkers had the codenames "Diogenes", "Gyges" and "Sokrates" - they were quite similar to each other This book tells the history of "Sokrates" at Stade in Germany and its role in the air defence of the region. The history is quite detailed and well-documented. The author explains how the German air-defence and radar worked and how it was organised. But he is also quite well-informed about the GIANT bunker and its purpose. There is also much information on the anti-aircraft artillery units in the area. The book is written in German and is illustrated with 150+ photos', plans, drawings, maps and documents. A VERY interesting book about a quite interesting subject - on which it is hard to find good information. Most of the photos were taken during or right after the war.
